A proposed wind farm in Caithness is expected to pay out the highest community benefit rate in Scotland for such developments. The 22 turbine Dunbeath development will pay the community £250,000 a year in addition to rent for crofters and two affected sheep stock clubs. Local crofters are now asking the Executive to let the development go ahead. Angus MacDonald reports.

Dunbeath Wind Energy Limited, a joint venture between the RTC Scotland and Falck Renewables Limited is proposing a 22 turbine, 69 megawatt development two and a half miles inland from Dunbeath on rough grazing land under crofting tenure. Dunbeath and Ahorn Sheep Stock Clubs and Dunbeath Estates have received the Land Court's approval and the decision now rests the Executive. A £250,000 a year community benefit fund including ownership of two turbines is proposed. This gives a rate of £3,700 a megawatt, the highest rate yet in Scotland. Dunbeath Sheep Stock Club Chairman Archie Sinclair said they couldn't afford to miss the opportunity. He said agricultural income was declining, residents are mainly elderly and they could now improve local services significantly.
