Power station building in construction
Millennium Wind Farm Ltd. has agreed to pay approximately £80,000 per year to benefit the community for the lifetime of the wind farm. The cash contribution will be shared between the communities of Invergarry, and Fort Augustus and Invermoriston. The community benefit fund will be administered by representatives of the two communities to provide funding for long term projects to benefit the communities in areas such as energy efficiency, conservation, tourism and community development.
In addition, with the support of Energy4All Ltd – a company who work to promote community ownership of renewable energy schemes and energy conservation measures, a co-operative will be set up by local people to purchase a stake in the wind farm. The co-op will buy a share in the wind farm from Falck Renewables Ltd. Local people will be able to join the co-op, buying shares worth between approx £250 and £20,000. Profits from the sale of the green electricity produced by the wind farm will then be distributed to members through an annual dividend.
Falck has established a liaison group with the community councils in order to keep local communities informed of progress during construction of the wind farm. The liaison group will continue to meet regularly throughout the construction phase.
Significant protections were put in place to protect breeding birds, particularly Golden Plover, during construction. An extensive programme of fence modification has been put in place to improve the habitat for black grouse around the wind farm.
