The San Sostene wind farm is located in the Commune of San Sostene in Calabria. The project will extend across a mountainous region owned by the municipality. Part of the land is covered by conifer and hard wood forests. The elevation of the site ranges from 900 m to 1,200 m. The total installed capacity will be up to 77 MW.

Following detailed monitoring of the wind resource, electrical connection studies, environmental studies and the impact on local communities, San Sostene was recognized as an attractive location for a wind farm as it is a particularly windy location. After carrying out extensive environmental assessment work, preliminary enabling works are currently being carried out on access roads, and major construction activities began in autumn 2007.

The project has been divided into two regions, the North Ridge and the South Ridge. The South Ridge will consist of 28 turbines. The North Ridge will consist of up to 14 turbines.

Siemens will perform the electrical works. Civil work will be performed by local contractors.

The South Ridge wind farm is due to begin generating electricity by December 2008. The North Ridge is due to begin generating electricity by the end of October 2009.
